This course was developed in conjunction with experts from within the NHS specifically for those in the NHS who need to know about keeping patient confidentiality and maintaining security of information. It covers key issues following Caldecott and the Data Protection Act to protect patients, staff and colleagues.

At the end of this course the learner will understand:

• their responsibilities in maintaining the security and confidentiality of patient and/or staff data
• the implications of the Caldecott report and the Patient's Charter
• the relevant legislation and legal Acts and their implications on security and confidentiality
• the policies and recommendations on managing the security of information
• and be able to demonstrate their understanding and competence in maintaining responsibilities
